West Cumbrian pigeon fanciers are planning for a Monday race after the weekend weather forecast was particularly bad.
It’s not common practice, because of the problems that it creates for the working fancier, and the organisers have apologised for a rare Monday race.
The birds are back inland after Sunday’s cross channel race from Fougeres in France and will be liberated at Holmsley which is in the New Forest, six miles from an old familiar race-point in Christchurch.
The birds will be race marked on Saturday and the following pick-up times have been announced – West Cumberland Federation 6pm; Workington Victoria 6.20pm; Flimby 6.45pm; East Cumberland Federation 7.45pm and Furness Federation 9pm.
The Cumbria Region Combine result from last week-end’s race from Fougeres showed a clear winner in Dave Harrison of Egremont but also a terrific performance by Geoff Fallows in Millom with four of his six entries back inside 39 minutes.
CUMBRIA COMBINE (166 birds): 1, D. Harrison (Egremont) 1150; 2, 3, 4, 6, Fallows and Brunskill 1091, 1078, 1060, 1031; 5, A and K Young (Millom) 1039.
