Sadie Wilson with Tucker

It was a busy day for hound trailing on Saturday with two meetings taking place.

Trails were held at the Roman Wall Show at Steel Rigg and Greenholme Show.

At the Roman Wall Show, the Seniors got things off to a flying start with a field of four. Sportsman for Willie and Craig Mark was sent off as the favourite.

The hounds pass the trail field after roughly eight minutes of running but the visibility had reduced and the hounds weren’t as easy to spot but it looked like all four hounds were together – Sportsman, Eden Rayna for David Clifford, Embrace for Laura Steele, Andrew and Joel Bullman, and Ian Rumney and Millie’s Lass for George McGimpsy, and Gillian and Millie Telford. All of them took turns of driving the bunch.

The hounds could only be spotted when they were 100 yards off the last wall. The hounds were still together with Sportsman leading from Eden Rayna, Embrace and Millie’s Lass but Millie’s Lass showed a quick turn of foot after running wide before the gap in the wall. However, Sportsman managed to keep hold of the win by three lengths from Millie’s Lass. Eden Rayna was in third and Embrace fourth.

Up next were the Senior Maidens with a field of 11 lining up at the slip. Croft Lass for Stanley, Carole and Sarah Jackson, Ricky Deacon and Donald Hodgson was sent off as the favourite.

Leading the way was Tallulah for George Burgon and Carole Logan, ahead of Croft Lass, Castle Callant for Marti Borthwick and Amy Brookes, Thorn Heart for Colin Sattherwaite and Foxparke Elliot’s Lass for Robyn, Ellie, Grace, and Nicola Napier and Brooke Butler.

Daphne and Willie Mark with Sportsman

As the hounds showed onto the finish, two had broken clear, with Croft Lass getting the win by four lengths from Thorn Heart and Castle Callant in third.

The Pups saw a field of two – Tucker for Nicola McMaster and Anthony Skelton blazed a lonely trail and went on to take the win and claim his sixth Puppy win of the season.

In the Puppy Maidens, 14 took to the trail. Foxparke Rita’s Rose for Robyn, Ellie, Grace, and Nicola Napier, Brooke Butler and Darren Clark was sent off as the favourite.

Going out over the first road and climbing out of sight, Denton Phantom for Lee, Hayley, Joey and George Wall, Sandra Mordue and Ted Storrow led out well ahead of Spring Gardener for Jenny Horn and I Am It for Ruth Graham and Charlie Dixon.

Sarah Harper with Delta Fortune

As the hounds first showed there was a group of 10 leading the way with Denton Phantom doing most of the driving, as they got to the final wall and into the finishing field it was sibling rivalry as Foxparke Rita’s Rose who finished to take the win from litter mate Denton Phantom and Foxparke Oink Oink for Robyn, Ellie, Grace, and Nicola Napier, Brooke Butler and Donald Hodgson in third.

The final race of the day was the Open Restricted with 14 taking to the trail. Denton Shamrock for Sandra Mordue, Ted Storrow and Lee Wall was sent off as the favourite.

As they crossed the first road and climbed out of sight, Millie’s Lad for George McGimpsy was leading the way from Discover for Anna and Kerry Lindsay.

Tracey Hill with Flecky Jack

As they showed onto the finish a group of four had broken clear with Millie’s Lad still leading the way and as they came through the last gap in the wall Meadow Artisan came from fourth to take the win by a length from Discover with Mr Mally for George Burgon and Carole Logan in third and Millie’s Lad in fourth. Denton Shamrock finished in fifth with the final ticket going to George and Carole’s other hound Overwater Hunter.

In the south, it was the Greenholme Show which takes place near Tebay.

This is the second year trails have taken place at the show. The running is a mixture of soft fell and fields and dykes and with the recent rain the running conditions were perfect for the hounds.

Alan and Adrian Little with Huntsman’s Quantum

The seniors were the first to slip with seven. Huntsman’s Rebel was sent off favourite.

Two had a good lead and it was Huntsman’s Quantum and Come Fly With Me, as they came back in to sight Huntsman’s Quantum had a good lead and won for Alan and Adrian Little. Huntsman’s Quantum hasn’t had a lot of running and this was his first ticket this season.

Come Fly With Me, for the Chisholm family, Harry Turner and Brian Graham, was second and there was a gap to the third hound Kinniside Bobby for handler Sophie Steele.

Next to run were the open pups with a slip of eight hounds. The current leader of the puppy championship Delta Fortune was favourite.

Ian Donaldson with Huntsman’s Quartz

When they showed for the first time there were five hounds together. Once they came up out of the dip Delta Fortune had a good lead and crossed the line in first place to take his eighth win for Sarah Harper. Close behind in second place was Stephen Irving’s and Caroline Graham’s Zoya with Ian Fleet, Jayne Petersen and Eleanor and Oliver Chisholm’s Chapel Lad in third.

Next to slip were the open maidens with 14 hounds. Miterdale Green Queen was favourite but when the hounds came back in to sight before dropping down there were plenty of hounds all in with a chance.

When they came back in to view it was Flecky Jack and Maeve who were head-to-head racing up to the line but it was Flecky Jack who just pulled clear by a neck to take the win for the Hetherington family from Fletchertown.

Christine Brownlee’s Maeve finished in second with Miterdale Green Queen having to settle for third place for Sophie Steele.

Next to slip were the open restricted with 10 hounds.

Stanley Jackson with Croft Lass

Huntsman’s Sparkle, Blue Striker and Miterdale Rambler were joint favourites but as they showed and dropped in, it was Huntsman’s Sparkle who had a good lead and came on to the finish but didn’t come straight in.

Instead the dog stopped, by which time the chasing bunch had caught up and it was Huntsman’s Quartz and Malia who were head-to-head racing to the line but it was Huntsman’s Quartz who just got up to take the win for Ian Donaldson, with Christine having to settle for her second place of the day.

Georgia Bryden with Eagle Rock

Miterdale Rambler for Sophie Steele finished in third, with Donna and Shaun Hetherington’s Tesla finishing in fourth place. James and Ava McClellan’s Duchess Ava finished in fifth with Brian and Erin Rowlandson  Blue Striker taking sixth ticket. Meanwhile, Huntsman’s Sparkle still hadn’t crossed the line.

Ellie Napier with Foxparke Rita’s Rose

The last race of the day was the veterans with eight runners. As they showed for the first time, there were two hounds clear – Eagle Rock and Reebok.

When they showed again they were still close together and it was a great battle up to the line with Eagle Rock for Linda Neale, Mark, Josh and Georgia Bryden just getting the decision from Brian Graham’s Reebok in second place. Bretton was third.

Paul Airey and Joanne Hodgson with Meadow Artisan
