A new project to help Cumbrian youngsters build careers in creative industries has been launched.
The three-year See It To Be It has been given £175,000 by Arts Council England and will work with theatres, museums and arts organisations as well as careers and education providers across the count.
Led by Cumbria Arts and Culture Network, it aims to make sure creative careers are well represented in schools and college career programmes, bring together development opportunities and create more paid opportunities for young people across the county.
Arts and cultural organisations are stepping forward to be part of the new scheme, including theatres and arts centres, dance organisations, museums and inclusive arts organisations.
There will be a particular emphasis on supporting young people who face the greatest challenges, for example, as a result of disability or neurodivergence.
Brewery Arts in Kendal is backing the project. CEO and artistic director Miriam Randall said: “Young people need to have opportunities to discover, explore and shape the arts and creative industries, wherever they live.
“At Brewery Arts, our mission is to empower the next generation of creatives, so I am delighted we are part of See It To Be It, a vital project that will boost skills, confidence and connections across the county.”
Project partner and co-director of The Knotted Project theatre company, Simon McElligott said: “Our mission is to transform young people’s future through the power of theatre and this new investment will ensure that creative young people can thrive here in Cumbria.”
Sarah Glass, executive director at the Centre for Leadership Performance, said: “The Centre for Leadership Performance is committed to developing Cumbria’s future leaders, we know how vital it is that young people see creative careers as real, accessible options.
“See It To Be It inspires ambition, builds confidence, and champions future talent. We’re proud to be part of a project that helps make those futures feel possible.”
The project will begin this summer.
