League action has now progressed to the second half of the season in the Derwent Valley Asbestos Removals Individual League.
Kevin Basnett delivered a scintillating performance, brushing aside home player Dave Chapman with a 4-1 victory in a match highlighted by an impressive trio of 30+ breaks.
From the outset, Basnett set the tone taking the opening frame with some crisp potting.
In the second, Basnett continued to apply the pressure, compiling a break of 31, to set up a 2-0 lead. Chapman showed signs of life in the third, but it was Basnett who managed to hold out and secure a closely fought frame, and extend his lead.
The fourth frame saw Basnett once again in lethal form, notching a break of 59 to take the frame with ease. The final frame saw a moment of drama. Basnett looked in total control, delivering his third 30+ break of the evening – a composed 38 – and eyeing up a whitewash victory.
But Chapman had other ideas though and a brilliant snooker with only pink and black remaining gave him the chance to edge the frame and prevent the whitewash. Basnett’s win moves him into the Division 1 title position with Peter O’Hagan and Ryan Ismay within touching distance just three points behind.
Ismay delivered a composed performance to overcome Andrew Mitchelhill 4-1 and continue his Division 1 title quest.
He had opened the match in style, taking the first frame with clinical potting and smart safety play.
However, Mitchelhill responded emphatically in frame two, registering his only win of the night with an dominant performance to level the match at 1-1.
From that point on, it was all one-way traffic. Ismay showed his class in the third frame, producing a 31 break en route to a dominant victory.
He followed it up with solid performances in frames four and five, wrapping up the match with back-to-back frame wins and sealing the 4-1 scoreline.
In a closely fought Division 1 clash, O’Hagan narrowly defeated Mark Tunstall with a 3-2 frame victory.
The match began with a dominant performance from O’Hagan, comfortably taking the opener with a break of 42.
O’Hagan’s momentum continued into the second frame, where a break of 32 helped him secure the win, leaving him 2-0 up and in control.
O’Hagan maintained the pressure in the third, with further consistent scoring paving the way to a comfortable victory and an unassailable 3-0 lead. Despite the scoreline, Tunstall refused to fold and in the fourth frame, the home player responded with a gritty performance to edge a close fought frame and earn a valuable point.
Then Tunstall maintained the fightback in the final frame to finish the match on a high note.
However, the late surge wasn’t enough to overturn O’Hagan’s early dominance.
In a gripping Division Two encounter, Chris Hunter emerged victorious with a narrow 3-2 win over Stephen Harrison, sealing the match with a dominant performance in the final frame after a tightly contested battle.
The match began with Harrison looking sharp, taking the first frame in a confident start.
However, Hunter responded swiftly, finding rhythm and consistency to level the match with a win in frame two.
The momentum appeared to swing toward Hunter in the third, where he again triumphed in a close-fought frame, edging ahead in the match 2-1.
However, Harrison wasn’t done yet, as he came back strong in the fourth with a composed win, to set up a high-stakes decider.
With both players tied at two frames apiece, it was Hunter who rose to the occasion. Delivering his best snooker of the night, he swept the final frame in emphatic fashion to claim the match 3-2.
In a commanding performance, Stephen Jackson maintains his control of Division Two with a clean sweep over Adam Sowden.
Jackson demonstrated control and consistency throughout the match, outscoring Sowden in each frame.
Jackson opened the match in dominant fashion, taking the first frame emphatically.
Sowden struggled to find rhythm, with Jackson continuing to apply pressure, securing the second frame. Despite a slight improvement from Sowden in the third and fourth frames, Jackson remained relentless, claiming both.
The final frame followed the same pattern, with Jackson wrapping up the match with ease to seal a decisive 5-0 victory.
Jackson’s win keeps him level on points with rival Chris Hunter, but crucially Jackson holds a game in hand.
