Two Cumbrian adventurers are attempting to paddle around the entire coastline of Ireland in a handmade canoe.
Rich Ensoll and Johan Hoving, of Ulverston, began their clockwise journey near Cork last month in Ronan, a handmade, skin-on-frame open canoe.
The duo have already covered over 1,200 km, navigating one of the most challenging and stunning coastlines in the world.
Their journey is due to be completed on Friday August 15.
Fewer than 100 people have successfully circumnavigated Ireland by sea kayak and no one has ever completed the route in a traditional open canoe.
The pair are spending around 16 hours a day in the canoe
Rich and Johan are using this expedition to raise awareness and funds for The Kepplewray Trust’s Participation and Inclusion Fund (Cumbria) – helping people of all abilities and backgrounds access outdoor experiences and Oxfam Ireland.
Rich is a senior lecturer at the University of Cumbria. A long-time supporter of Oxfam Ireland, Rich uses this expedition to challenge gender stereotypes and promote access to adventure for underrepresented groups.
Johan is founder of River Deep Mountain High. A supporter of Kepplewray Trust, Johan champions the centre’s mission of activities for all walks of life, ensuring that adventure is open to everyone, regardless of ability or background.
