River Island’s Workington store is among 33 branches set to close after the troubled firm was given the go-ahead by the High Court.
The fashion retailer announced that it was closing the shops as part of a major shake-up, prompted by a change in customer habits from high street to online shopping.
Its restructure, overseen by advisers PwC, was approved by the High Court yesterday, Friday August 8.
In 2023, the retailer saw a pre-tax loss of £33.2m after turnover dropped 19% to £578.1m. The year before, River Island reported a £2m profit.
The firm said 33 of its 230 outlets, which employs a total of around 5,500 people would close by January next year.
River Island’s Workington store is in Washington Square.
River Island also has a store in Carlisle, which is not among the 33 earmarked for closure.
