England Lioness Ella Toone has announced her engagement to a former Workington Reds footballer.

Toone shared snaps of the pair’s engagement to her more than 800,000 followers on Instagram.

Joe Bunney spent part of the 2023/24 season at Borough Park after former manager Danny Grainger had organised a loan deal with Stalybridge Celtic.

Manchester-born Bunney proposed with the help of his four-year-old son Arlo, during a visit to Ibiza.

The scene was completed with a display of red roses sculpted in the shape of a heart with a sign reading will you marry me?

Toone and Bunney are believed to have been dating for three years before their engagement.

During his time with the Reds, Bunney was accompanied by Ella and she spent considerable time with the young fans at Borough Park signing autographs and being photographed with them.

Joe is also a coach at Toone’s ET7 Academy, which helps young girls develop their skills for a career in the game.

As for his own playing career he worked his way through the Lancaster youth system while he was studying at Myserscough College before breaking into the first team.

He was briefly at Kendal, Stockport and Northwich before his first big break came in 2013 when he signed for Rochdale and scored the winner on his debut against Plymouth.

In five years at Spotland he played 122 games and scored 16 goals before playing for Blackpool, Bolton and back to Rochdale on loan before joining Matlock Town.

He was back in League football with Hartlepool and Grimsby before returning to Non League in 2021 and since then has played for Altrincham, Warrington Rylands, Macclesfield and Ashton United.

Bunney joined Stalybridge Celtic for the 2023/24 season and initially linked up with the Reds on a 28-day loan.
