The M6 near Carlisle has reopened following a collision which saw a HGV overturn yesterday.

Police were contacted at around 3.45am yesterday, Monday August 11, with a report of a collision involving a HGV and a Vauxhall Corsa south of Carlisle.

The HGV was travelling along the northbound carriageway just south of junction 42 at Lowhurst and overturned, coming to rest across the central reservation and in both carriageways.

No one was seriously injured.

The M6 was closed between junction 41 at Catterlen Interchange and junction 42 for Carlisle South.

National Highways traffic officers and Cumbria police worked through the early hours of the morning to free traffic stuck behind the incident.

Sections of all three lanes and the hard shoulder along the southbound carriageway were being resurfaced yesterday afternoon and lanes one and two reopened last night.

Lane three in both carriageways is likely to remain closed into this evening while National Highways repairs around 120 metres of central reservation safety barrier damaged in the incident.

A signed, southbound diversion was in place yesterday, with drivers using the parallel A6 between the two junctions.

However, there was heavy congestion along this diversion route and drivers with through journeys were advised to avoid this section of the M6 altogether and plan an alternative route to their destination.
