A free support service for current and retired professional rugby league players who have concerns around issues such as memory loss and dementia is returning to Cumbria next month.
The sport’s official charity, Rugby League Cares, is holding its next Brain Health Clinic on Wednesday September 3 and is inviting players past and present – and their immediate family members – to get in touch.
The clinic will be hosted by a Dementia UK specialist Admiral Nurse who specialises in the cognitive conditions experienced by people involved in sport.
Players can get advice on a wide range of topics, including
- how to get a dementia diagnosis
- practical tips and advice for caring for a person with dementia
- understanding symptoms and changes in behaviour
- managing your own feelings
- transition into a nursing or residential home, or stays in hospital.
RL Cares director of wellbeing, Steve McCormack, the former Whitehaven head coach, said: “The response we have had since launching the Brain Health Clinics last year has been outstanding.
“More than 30 players and their families have already accessed support from our Dementia UK Admiral Nurse and the feedback we get from them is universally positive.
“We were last in Workington in March when there was a great uptake of appointments from players past and present, and we’re delighted to be heading back to Cumbria to make this important service available.”
Appointments last around 45 minutes, are free, totally confidential and can take place by telephone, online or in person at the Melbreak Hotel, Winscales Road, Great Clifton, on Wednesday September 3.
