Cartmel Racecourse is preparing for a thrilling climax to the 2025 jumps season as two of Cumbria’s most celebrated racing figures.
Barrow jockey Charlotte Jones and Cartmel trainer Jimmy Moffat lead the standings heading into the track’s biggest fixture of the year.
Jones is in pole position in the Jockeys’ Challenge, needing one last push over the bank holiday weekend to seal victory in what has already been a
remarkable summer campaign.
She is no stranger to success at Cartmel. In 2021, she made history by becoming the first female rider and the first conditional jockey to win the Cartmel Jockeys’ Challenge.
She has ridden over 30 winners on the course, including her first career victory aboard Lough Kent in 2017. Last season, she marked another milestone by riding out her claim with a memorable double at the track.
Known by many racegoers as the Queen of Cartmel, Jones, who has also fitted in achieving a first class degree in equine science between rides.
Moffat, based just a few furlongs from the course, holds a commanding lead in the Cartmel Trainers’ Challenge, with a string of consistent performances giving him an almost unassailable points advantage.
After the heartbreak of last year, when he finished level on points with Yorkshire trainer Ben Haslam but lost the title on a countback of wins, Moffat will be keen to
secure the crown outright on home turf this time around.
The meeting, takes place tomorrow, Saturday August 23 and Bank Holiday Monday, August 25.
