Workington Comets put on extra meeting in memory of young fan

Workington Comets are putting on an extra meeting in memory of a young fan who died in tragic circumstances.

Jay Cartmell, aged eight, from Frizington was killed while on a family rabbit shooting trip to Warcop.

He had been a keen supporter of the Comets and was showing promise as a young fledgling rider.

No specific date has been announced but it will be in September and run as a four-team tournament.

Comets team manager James Denham said: “We are going to run a meeting in the memory of Jay whose mum and dad Leigha and James have done a great job so far of organising it.

“We just have few things to put in place before we confirm any details. So far it looks a cracking line-up and it will be a four-team tournament style, something which we don’t see anymore in speedway.

“It’s a really good cause for the fans to get behind and hopefully it will be an entertaining meeting with a good crowd.

“We should be in a position to announce more details next Sunday at home to Berwick but if anyone wants to help out with the meeting, as there are a few costs associated with running it, then please get in touch with either the club or get in touch with Leigha or James.”
