A Barrow pair aim to take part in a challenge to Race Across the UK to raise funds for a naval charity.
Relying only on their wits, public transport, a map and what they can carry in four days, Scott Goodrum and Joseph Pipe are gearing up to take part in the Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity’s race from September 2.
Team Are We There Yet have powerful personal connections to the armed forces and a shared commitment to mental health awareness, the pair is taking on this epic challenge not just for the thrill of the race, but to give back to those who serve and the families who stand behind them.
The challenge is open to everyone – both military and civilian. Participants will travel from Edinburgh to Dartmouth without map apps, cars or planes to raise funds in support of naval families facing life-changing injuries, mental health challenges, and financial hardship.
The decision to fundraise for RNRMC stems from more than just a desire to complete a physical challenge. For Scott and Joe, it’s about honouring personal connections and family histories that are closely tied to the Royal Navy.
Scott said: “I’ve struggled with my own mental health, and being partially deaf with deaf family members, I understand some of the barriers faced by service personnel and their families.
“I also have friends currently serving in the Royal Navy, and through conversations and personal experiences, I’ve seen just how much they sacrifice. Supporting a charity that looks after their wellbeing, and that of their families, feels incredibly important.”
Joe’s motivation is rooted in his family’s past.
He said: “My great-grandad served in the Navy during the Second World War and was the only survivor of three separate ship sinkings.
“The trauma he went through left him with severe mental health issues. He would often believe he was still at war and that his family were the enemy.
“He never received any help after the war, and that had a big impact on him and those around him. Supporting a charity that offers mental health resources and long-term support for veterans and their families means a lot to me.”
Race Across the UK will challenge both teammates physically and mentally, but their motivation is clear: to raise vital funds and awareness for those who have served, and continue to serve, in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.
Janet Garner and Laura Lake, also from Barrow, are taking part in the challenge.
