Workington Town’s final game of the season ended 10 minutes early because of a medical incident.
Head coach Jonty Gorley took ill at the game and required prompt action from medical staff in attendance.
Gorley was taken to Scunthorpe General Hospital for treatment.
In a statement tonight, Workington Town said: “We’re delighted and relieved to say that he has now been released and will travel home with his wife Marie and our Physio Courtney.
“Chairman Graeme Peers stayed with them and will stay at Lennie Clark’s overnight and travel home tomorrow. Thanks Lennie.
“Thanks to Goole Vikings RLFC for providing the best of care and Helen McDowell for her assistance
“We’d like to thank the medical staff at Goole No Name Travel Ltd throughout.
“Thank you for the compassion and concern shown by the Goole staff and in particular Head Coach Scott Taylor.
“Also to Vicky Brown at No Name Travel Ltd who organised the car within minutes.
“Jonty thanks everyone for their kind messages and concern.
“We’ll give an update as soon as it is appropriate.”
Both teams agreed to finish early after consulting the referee.
Town were ahead 12-6 at the time and the result will stand.
They had gone ahead in the first half with a try from Levi Artiga and it was 6-0 at half-time as Jake Carter added a penalty.
Before having to go off with a knee injury Dom Wear sent in Rio Corkill for the second try, converted by Carter.
Town then lost Jamie Doran to injury and Goole reduced the arrears with a try from Andy Ellis, playing his last game before retirement. Callum Rutland converted.
Town were always going to finish runners-up whatever the result today and with Whitehaven beating champions North Wales Crusaders they finish just a point behind.
