The iconic Langdale Marathon returns for its 38th year this weekend.
Places are still available for the marathon – and the half marathon – which takes place on Saturday, September 13.
Organised on a not-for-profit basis by Lakeland Trails, the event is a fundraiser for Brathay Trust, its charity partner.
This year’s race is especially poignant, as it marks the first since the death of its legendary founder, Rocket Rod Berry.
Organisers said: “A local running icon, Rod was the vibrant force behind both the Langdale Marathon and Half, and the equally beloved Langdale Pudding 10k, both established in the 1980s.
“Famed for his striking Union flag shorts, straight-talking approach, and unwavering devotion to the local community, Rod’s efforts have shaped the Langdale road races into one of the most anticipated and scenic road marathons in the country.
“This year, as the runners take their places on the start line, Rod’s spirit will be ever-present. His family will join the event, both participating on the course and helping to award prizes at the post-race ceremony.”
The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel will once again play host, selling breakfast butties, post-race food, and celebratory drinks for runners and supporters alike and there will be a live performance from local singer-songwriter Kev Kendal.
On-course nutrition will be provided by local company Voom Nutrition, appropriately supplying their Pocket Rockets to give the marathon runners a final boost.
