A West Cumbrian man has been jailed and banned from wearing a face mask or hood in public when he is released from custody as punishment for offences of violence and burglary.
Kyran Frank Weston, 21, was sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court earlier today for offences he committed on two separate dates earlier this year.
On June 20, after a man was dragged to the ground on a Workington town centre street in darkness, Weston repeatedly kicked and punched the stricken victim to his head. Weston also disarmed him of a baton-style weapon which he held above his head while making threats to the man.
A police officer identified Weston as the main aggressor when viewing CCTV footage of the incident.
On the night of July 14, Weston burgled a man’s Casson Road home in Workington while he and his family were asleep inside, stealing two pairs of trainers and a jacket. That man later described being left in fear and anxious by the crime.
The same night, Weston attempted to break into five town homes in the Glenn Road, Calder Drive and Birch Close area, trying door handles as he sought unsuccessfully to get inside. Doorbell footage and CCTV caught Weston in the act.
One woman who was at home with her children and became aware of the would-be burglar’s entry attempts, later spoke of her privacy being destroyed and of feeling unsafe in her property.
Heavily convicted Weston, of no fixed address, admitted burglary and four counts of attempted burglary; plus assault, threatening a person with an offensive weapon, possessing the weapon in public and using threatening behaviour.
The court heard of Weston’s traumatic upbringing, the deaths of three family members and of his introduction to drugs.
Judge Nicholas Barker imposed an immediate 30-month jail term, telling Weston: “It is always said about dwelling house burglaries that it is the psychological impact of the invasion of a person’s home, more than the loss of personal property and items.”
Weston was also made subject to the tough terms of a criminal behaviour order in a bid to protect the public and curb his offending.
Conditions ban him from wearing a hood or face covering in public, being under the influence of alcohol or drugs in public, visiting the roads on which the burglary and attempted break-ins occurred and also entering Workington Schemelink premises.
