Difficult fixture for Ospreys at Darlington

The Ospreys, beaten by Wigton in their opening Colts game of the season, almost followed up with a stunning victory.

A difficult fixture at reigning champions Darlington suggested a long afternoon but the Cumbrians did exceptionally well, only losing a thriller 40-36.

The Ospreys, a mix of Cockermouth and Keswick youngsters, took a large squad, including five new starters from last week’s Wigton game.

From last season’s encounters they knew their hosts would provide a fast, physical, and aggressive challenge—and that was clear within the first 10 minutes.

Darlington’s defence, counter-rucking, and strong carries from their big, but mobile pack saw them lead 14-0 early on.

But the Ospreys dug deep and front-row carries from Nathan Rickerby, Alfie Wright, and Jamie Black, along with midfield power from Zine Hodgson and Logan Fowler, put them on the front foot.

A re-shuffle moved Hodgson to fly-half and Max Carr to outside centre, instantly making the visitors more dangerous.

Hodgson then produced a pinpoint cross-field kick for debutant winger Ollie Muller, who finished superbly in the corner.

Darlington, however, were relentless in halting Ospreys momentum. Their winger crossed soon after and with an excellent touchline conversion they led 21-5.

However, just before half-time, hooker Josh Doran powered over for a try to cut the deficit to 11 points.

Determined to start the second half strongly, the Ospreys raised the intensity at the breakdown and quickened the transition game.

After sustained pressure, second-row Harry Robinson pounced on a loose ball and showed great footwork to dive over. Joe Tyson added the conversion.

Moments later came the try of the day. Launched from inside their own 22, full-back Tyson made ground down the right before Muller, now at scrum-half, injected tempo. Hodgson’s long pass set captain Jamie Black free, and he linked with hooker Doran.

Most hookers would have settled for 10 metres but Doran backed himself, storming through, before crashing over. Tyson converted to give the Ospreys the lead at 24-21.

Unfortunately, lapses in game management and Darlington’s sheer determination saw the hosts respond with back-to-back tries, swinging it back to 35-24.

Still, the Ospreys fought back. Captain Black led by example, tapping quickly and bulldozing through three defenders for a crowd-pleasing try.

With 10 minutes left and the Ospreys tiring, Darlington capitalised again, turning over possession at the ruck and finishing clinically in the corner for 40-29.

But there was still one final surge from the visitors. Working their way upfield, the Ospreys created space for Doran to complete his hat-trick, with Tyson converting to close the gap to just four points at the final whistle.

Man of the Match for the Ospreys was Roman Martin – for his tireless work on the wing and in the back row.

The Ospreys are now looking forward to hosting Billingham on Sunday at Cockermouth RUFC, 1pm kick-off.
