Carlisle United hotshot helps Blues to victory

Regan Linney missed out on the National League’s Player of the Month for August.

But the Carlisle United hotshot is making strong claims for another nomination for September.

He scored for the fourth game running, his ninth of the season to help the Blues win 2-1 at his former club Altrincham.

It was his superb finish ten minutes before half-time which restored Carlisle’s lead after they had been pegged back from the penalty spot.

Linney took aim from 25-yards and it flew into the top corner in spectacular fashion. This guy does not do tap ins.

Carlisle had gone in front after nine minutes with what seemed a good finish from Georgie Kelly. But that has now been put down as an own goal from Altrincham’s Lewis Bank who was challenging Kelly at the time.

But it was Kelly who was penalised – ironically for a foul on Banks – that led to a penalty which was knocked home by Jimmy Knowles.

Just before half-time Knowles missed a great chance to put Altrincham level but he completely fluffed an open goal.

Nine minutes into the second-half Cameron Harper, who had been booked earlier, was shown a second yellow and United had to play out the rest of the game with ten men.

Despite the handicap they defended stubbornly as Altrincham pressed but could not find a way through.

Indeed Altrincham also finished with ten men when Tom Crawford was sent-off for a second yellow in the fourth minute of added time.
