A bid has been revealed to demolish a former Barrow church hall to make way for 16 apartments.
St Paul’s Church Hall, on Hawcoat Lane, closed in 2020 and now Ulverston-based Hawcoat Residential Limited wants to demolish it and replace it with a three-storey apartment block.
The existing building was built in 1879 as a school and meeting room. It was extended in 1887 and suffered structural damage in 1941 in air raids and had to be temporarily closed. It continued as St Paul’s School until 1957, when the new school opened and latterly was used as a church hall.
The firm said the three-storey apartment block would have 16 two-bedroom flats. of different sizes and layouts, plus 21 car parking spaces and EV charging points.
It would be built in three separate elements, in an L-shape, each with a dedicated staircase and lift access.
The consultation for the project began on September 19 and is expected to end on October 10.
No final date has been published for when the final decision will take place.
