Kendal got off the mark in Regional 1 North East with an 18-7 win at York.
Although both had lost their opening two games, Kendal’s defeats had been at home while York had lost both on their travels.
Both teams came into the contest after losing their first two games of the season, the difference being this was Kendal’s first away game, and York’s first home game.
Although it was good to get the first win on the board Kendal were left regretting a series of missed chances which should have added a four-try bonus point.
Persistent rain throughout made it uncomfortable for the players but the pitch held up well.
After a fast, promising start Kendal opened the scoring on 10 minutes.
Stand-off Evan Moir, who was to emerge as their man of the match, had put in a probing kick to the corner and the chasing Ben Dixon but the home defender under enough pressure he could only find touch in his own 22.
The Kendal line-out continued to prosper although the backs rarely made substantial ground in the face of keen opposition disrupting effectively.
On the other hand the Kendal defence was solid in the face of some strong York pressure as the home side battled hard to get on the scoreboard.
Kendal created a number of opportunities to add to their 7-0 lead but none were taken and that was still the score at half-time.
The visitors actually finished the half with 14 men after Matt Houghton was yellow carded, for a dangerous tackle.
It was Kendal who extended their lead early in the second half as they opted for a kick when presented with a kick in front of the sticks and Moir duly obliged.
But York hit back with a try from winger Adam Infante which was converted by Harry Shackleton and at 10-7 the Kendal lead looked precarious.
But Kendal were next to score with a second penalty from Moir after a deliberate knock-on.
York tried to hit back but some really strong defence by Kendal kept them out.
Five minutes from the end Kendal scored a second try to wrap up the points.
Dixon had just been beaten to a kick though and the York defender booted the ball dead.
From the resultant scrum Patrick Wolstenholme picked up quickly and opted for the pass to the blindside where Moir shovelled it on to Dan Shorrock who celebrated his 100th appearance for the club by registering his 48th try.
