Sun Inn Sharks: Ryan Bedford, Jobby Dunn, Mel Scott & Steven Wheatcroft

With nine league games remaining, the race for the Maryport Pool League title is hotting up, and every frame is becoming increasingly important.

At the top of the table, Sun Inn Sharks remain the team to catch after another impressive week.

Their 5-2 victory over Swan Inn keeps them clear on 51 points, maintaining a six-point advantage as they continue to set the pace.

The chasing pack refused to let the leaders disappear. Bowling Club produced the result of the week with a dominant 7-0 win over Elbra Club C, while Elbra Club B kept their title hopes firmly alive by defeating MRLC B 5-2.

Both sides now sit on 45 points, six behind the Sharks, with everything still to play for over the final nine fixtures.

Butchers A remain firmly in the hunt after edging Elbra A 4-3, moving onto 42 points and keeping themselves within touching distance should the teams above slip up.

One of the closest contests of the week saw Maryport Rugby League Club A narrowly overcome Sun Inn Ballers 4-3, while Maryport Social Club also secured a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Glasson Rangers Rugby League Club to strengthen their position in the top half of the table.

Elsewhere, Butchers B picked up an important 4-3 win over Sun Dearham, and Graalot Working Men’s Club recorded the league’s only whitewash of the week, brushing aside Sun Inn Cannons 7-0 in emphatic fashion.

Current top six

  •  Sun Inn Sharks – 51 pts
  • Bowling Club – 45 pts
  • Elbra Club B – 45 pts
  • Butchers A – 42 pts
  • Sun Inn Ballers – 39 pts
  • Elbra A – 39 pts

With nine matches still to play, the title race is far from over. Sun Inn Sharks have built a healthy lead, but Bowling Club and Elbra Club B remain within striking distance, while Butchers A will be hoping to capitalise on any dropped points ahead.

From the battle for the championship to the fight for every league position, the closing weeks promise plenty more drama.

Every point – and every frame – could prove decisive before the season reaches its conclusion.
