It proved to be one game too far for Hensingham when they tackled the National Conference Division Two play-off final.
After battling their way to a fine sem-final win over Clock Face Miners they had to return to St. Helens to take on Pilkington Recs.
They trailed 10-0 at the break and always behind eventually lost 32-16.
The Cumbrians did threaten a comeback in the 46th minute when Ryan Templeton scored an unconverted try.
But the home side scored three converted tries to go 28-4 clear and virtually clinch promotion.
Kris Coward’s men did respond with a try from Neil Branthwaite, converted by Adam Williamson.
That was countered by two penalties for the home side before Hensingham did have the final word with a try from Luke Charlton which Williamson converted.
Nevertheless it’s been a memorable season for Hensingham who had been looking for back-to-back promotions.
