Aspiring drag performers are invited to take part in a new development programme led by Kendal Pride.

Drag Lab combines workshops with three performance opportunities for emerging artists to enhance their skills between now and the end of February.

Participants will get expert guidance and support from Kendal-based drag king Andi Blewitt as well as other visiting artists.

Sally Lofthouse-Jones, chair of the Kendal Pride organising group and creative producer of Drag Lab and whose alter ego is Andi Blewitt, said: “We’re thrilled to be able to offer this opportunity to drag performers who want to create their own act, and be a part of the growing queer performance scene in Cumbria.

“Across Kendal Pride festival weekend we want to see home grown talent on the stages and in venues, but that means supporting people year-round.

“So, if you fancy yourself a drag queen, king or thing, this is your opportunity.”

Anyone wanting to take part in the programme needs to be available on the workshop dates Saturday October 25, November 15, December 6, January 10 and February 14, and for the scratch performances in the evenings of the last three dates.

Drag Lab has six free places, which include a £250 bursary for each participant, and four paid places priced at £100 each.

To apply people need to submit a short application form, along with a personal statement either in written, video or audio form.

Applications close on Tuesday October 21 at 5pm and successful participants will be invited to hit the runway for the first workshop on Saturday October 25.

Drag Lab has been made possible thanks to funding from Westmorland and Furness Council’s Shared Prosperity Fund fund.
