Helping women get more active in Cumbria

A new initiative to help women get active in a part of Cumbria has been launched.

West Coast Wanderers, from Due North CIC is a women-only running programme designed to make running fun, inclusive, and sustainable.

It welcomes women of all ages and abilities in the Cumberland area, offering regular group runs, supportive coaching, and a friendly, social environment that celebrates confidence, community, and the joy of movement.

A key aim of the programme is to show that trail running doesn’t have to mean heading far into the hills — there are incredible routes and green spaces to explore right from people’s doorsteps and local towns.

This approach helps make trail running more accessible and inclusive, encouraging more women to enjoy the outdoors, wherever they live.

The project also funds local women to become UK Athletics Run Leaders, giving them the skills and confidence to lead groups in their own communities.

Mel Steventon, of Due North CIC, said: “West Coast Wanderers isn’t just about running — it’s about connection, confidence, and creating something lasting for women in our community.

“By helping women become leaders and explore Cumberland’s coast, fells, and local trails together, we’re building something that truly belongs to them.”
