A Barrow chapel, which later became a nightclub, could be bulldozed to make way for a six-storey apartment block.
DKS Barrow Ltd want to demolish the former Skint nightclub on Lawson Street to build the block of 24 flats.
The existing building was a Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, built in 1862.
DKS Barrow Ltd has applied for permission from Westmorland & Furness Council.
The planning application said the building was in a very poor condition with little or no chance of refurbishment or integration into any viable proposal.
It added: “Given the nature of the site there is no option other than to replicate the footprint of the existing building and make best use of the space to produce an effective proposal that is both viable and deliverable.
“The project aims to provide a high-quality residential accommodation with an emphasis on the private amenity space, with each apartment benefitting from a private balcony or terrace.”
The apartments would be one- or two-bedroom units.
