Workington’s St Joseph’s have produced a second England international at walking football.
Earlier this year Kate Smith was selected for the women’s team and now Martyn Marshall has played for a recently formed England Men’s Over-40s team.
Martyn, 48, was a former Workington Sunday League player with the Miners who has been keeping fit with walking football over the last 18 months.
Although largely a defender in his younger Sunday League days Martyn has been playing in goal at walking football.
He said: “England were playing their first-ever games at Over-40s level at the week-end and although we are still trialling for the team the two games count towards an England cap.
“The games at Birmingham’s Castle Vale were against Wales Dragons and we won both games, 5-1 and 3-1.
“I played a half of each game and I’m pleased to say that in my spells in goal I kept a clean sheet both times.
“They plan another training session in December and more full international games next year.
“When I started playing at St Joseph’s I got involved in a bit of coaching with Kate.
“My daughter plays girls football, firstly with Allerdale and now with Workington Town.”
Workington St Joseph’s Men train from 5pm tp 6pm on Mondays and Fridays while the Ladies train on Friday 6pm to 7pm.
Both groups are always looking to encourage new players.
