Cumbrian charity People First is celebrating its 35th birthday.
The independent advocacy group was set up by a small pioneering group of people meeting in a living room in Carlisle and has become a flourishing charity that has helped thousands of people across the North of England.
Since it was founded in 1991, People First has stood alongside those whose voices might otherwise go unheard, especially people navigating complex public services.
From advocacy, UDirect Support, The People First Academy, inclusion, Healthwatch and The Well Communities, it continues to deliver self-advocacy across Cumbria and Lancashire.
It said its aim was to help each person live their lives the way they chose.
This year, it has welcomed Cumberland Carers into People First, offering support to carers across Cumberland.
The team will provide guidance, advice and support to unpaid carers.
David Blacklock, CEO of People First, said: “People First started with a simple belief that everyone has the right to be respected, to be heard, and to shape the decisions that affect their lives.
“This core principle has been a cornerstone of our work. No matter where we are, Lancashire, Cumbria, or the North East, we continue to carry out this fundamental belief.
Today more than ever, we are proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with communities across the North of England, breaking down barriers, challenging perceptions, and creating opportunities so that everyone can live their best life.
“Advocacy in all its forms is not a luxury; it’s essential. It’s essential for a fair and just society.
“Therefore, as we celebrate our heritage, we remain deeply committed to evolving and innovating so that more people can be truly heard and respected.”
Mark Pannone, chair of the board of trustees, added: “This 35-year celebration is a chance to reflect on the incredible impact People First has had.
“It is an opportunity to recommit ourselves to the vision of inclusion and equality which led to the creation of People First so many years ago.
“The work is not finished – there is still plenty to do, and we’re determined to make the next 35 years just as inspiring as the last.”
Across the next 12 months, we’ll be marking this special milestone with a programme of celebrations and stories that shine a light on the incredible people who make People First what it is today.
“We will be sharing the voices and experiences of those we support and highlighting the dedication of our incredible staff and volunteers.
“This will take place whilst we continue to develop our services to support even more people across the north of England.
