A Carlisle man accused of manslaughter following the death of his mother has appeared in court.
Stewart Irwin, 56, faces one charge. This alleges the manslaughter of Veronica Irwin at an address on Rydal Street, off London Road, Carlisle, on July 28 2023.
Court papers specify that Mrs Irwin is alleged to have been unlawfully killed by her son contrary to common law.
Irwin appeared in the dock in front of a district judge at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court this morning.
During a five-minute hearing, Irwin spoke to confirm his name, date of birth and address of Rydal Street in the city.
No plea was entered to the charge by Irwin, who was represented by defence solicitor Lauren Heasley.
The charge faced by Irwin means his case can only be dealt with at Carlisle Crown Court, and it was formally sent there by district judge Philip Holden.
“It is a sad case, it seems,” said prosecutor George Shelley in a brief address to the district judge, “where the deceased is the defendant’s mother.”
No details about the allegation of manslaughter were outlined during the court hearing.
Irwin will next appear in front of a judge at the city’s crown court on December 1,
In the meantime he has been granted bail.
One condition remains in place and states that Irwin must report to a Carlisle police station during a specified three-hour time period on one day of the week.
