An accountant’s inspirational cancer story has helped her company raise a record amount at its annual charity fundraiser.
Ahead of Wear it Pink Day in aid of Breast Cancer Now, Mel Watson, who works at Saint & Co Chartered Accountants, shared how a positive mindset and a humorous outlook helped her through her cancer diagnosis.
Mel was 33 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and she has had a double mastectomy and her ovaries removed to control the spread of the disease.
Her desire to spread hope to others with cancer resonated with many people who heard or read her message, and it has helped Saint & Co raise close to £3,500 for Breast Cancer Now at the company’s annual bake sale and raffle, held across all its offices in Cumbria and Dumfries & Galloway.
Mel said: “I have been so touched by the messages I have received since I shared my cancer story, and it’s been humbling that even strangers have contacted me because they were inspired by my positivity during some very tough times.
“I’m so pleased that people have taken comfort and inspiration from my story, and I’d like to thank them for reaching out and helping Saint & Co raise such a fantastic amount of money for a really great charity, Breast Cancer Now.
“I’d also like to thank my colleagues across all our offices for taking part in the fundraiser and wearing pink to raise awareness of breast cancer.
“They have helped spread the message about how crucial it is that women check themselves regularly, visit their doctor and do cancer tests to make sure the disease is diagnosed at the earliest opportunity.”
The Wear it Pink fundraising total was boosted by further events held by Mel’s colleagues based in Saint & Co’s Penrith office.
Members of the team walked 10 miles and Victoria Elliott completed the Manchester Half Marathon to raise extra money for Breast Cancer Now.
