The Lakeland Dialect Society completed this year’s programme of events with its members day and dialect competition.
Entrants were competing for the Len Hayton Trophy.
The audience were treated to an entertaining mix in dialect.
They heard poems by famous dialect writers like John Richardson, traditional songs including Auld Mutton Pie warning lads at the hiring fair about the food at various farms, comedy and new writing.
With Kersmas (Christmas) coming up, the audience found out the origin of the fairy on top of the Christmas tree with the tale of Father Christmas – Bad Day at the Office.
Phillip Gate won this year’s Len Hayton Trophy with his sketch about misunderstandings in a kitchen in the New Starter.
The society wants to hear from actors and readers who would be interested in putting on a dialect production.
Its 2026 programme will be available on its website from the end of November at https://www.lakelanddialectsociety.co.uk.
The society said: “See if ye can git alang tae yan uv oor meetens nixt ‘eer.”
