Workington Town Rugby League club is mourning the death of its oldest supporter.
Arnold Ainsworth died yesterday, Tuesday November 25, at the age of 95.
Arnold, or Arnie as he was affectionately known, had watched Town in their first professional game against Broughton Rangers in 1945.
That began a love affair for the club as he continued to support them for the rest of his life.
Arnold often spoke about the glory days at Town and would tell everyone that he would be available as a sub for any of the games.
Arnold’s love for rugby didn’t stop with Town, however, as he was an avid supporter of Seaton Rangers.
Workington Town said: “We’re extremely sad to report that one of our longest serving supporters Arnold N Ainsworth has passed away peacefully.
“Arnie was there at our first match and until very recently followed us home and away.
“He was a gentleman and loved a pint and a craic before, during and after the match.
“He will be so missed at the club and everyone here is devastated.
“Matchdays just won’t be the same. RIP marra. We will do something fitting for a lifetime legend of the club.”
Tributes have poured in from across the globe including New Zealand where friends and family of former Town coach, the late Ged Stokes, sent their condolences, remembering Arnold from his trip in 2006 and Stokes’ time at Town.
Arnold was also fondly remembered by fans across the Championship.
Current and former players also sent their condolences.
