Five people have been arrested as police crack down on rural crime.

An operation was held on Wednesday, November 19, which saw multiple forces in the North of England come together.

Three vehicles were also seized, four fixed penalty notices were issued and 62 vehicles stopped.

Following a vehicle stop officers arrested four people – two youths aged 16 and 17 and two men aged 25 and 19 – on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle.

All four were bailed.

A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle with a proportion of a specified controlled drug above the specified limit. He was released under investigation.

The operation involved officers across multiple departments co-ordinated by the rural crime team.

Officers were also joined by several volunteers who gave up their time to assist with the operation.

Rural volunteers are a dedicated team who have supported Cumbria police over many years, their local knowledge and commitment is invaluable.

Cumbria police said it allowed officers to patrol more effectively and cover larger areas of the rural community effectively.

Cumbria police added it was committed to targeting travelling rural criminals and are keen to encourage people to report suspicious activity.

Sergeant Amanda McKirdy, Cumbria Constabulary’s Rural Crime Team, said: “I would like to thank the volunteers that joined officers during this operation to help us target rural crime.

“We are committed to targeting travelling rural criminals, and this operation allows us to work with our bordering force to target offenders who cross county boundaries to commit their crimes and evade detection.

“We always encourage our communities to report suspicious activity.

“By sharing information and taking action, we are actively disrupting criminal activity which in turn makes our rural communities a safer place.”
