New bus services are set to launch in north and West Cumbria next week.

Cumberland Council is rolling out the second phase of its Cumberland Go bus network on Monday December 1.

It aims to bring improved connections and more frequent services to the region.

The second phase of the new routes will bring new services in and around Carlisle, Anthorn, Whitehaven, Ravenglass, Millom, Barrow and Egremont.

Stagecoach will operate:

  • Carlisle – Anthorn (#93, #64)
  • Whitehaven – Ravenglass / Ravenglass – Millom – Barrow & Whitehaven – St Bees – Egremont (#7, 32)

Reays will operate:

  • Carlisle – Anthorn (Sunday service)

On Monday January 5, phase three of the initiative will also see the following services launched:

Stagecoach will operate:

  • Carlisle – Cumberland Infirmary – Cockermouth – Whitehaven – West Cumberland Hospital (#600X)
  • Whitehaven Town Services (#22/#22A and #1/#1A)

Reays will operate:

  • Carlisle – Hadrian’s Wall (#HW1)
  • Locke Road Surgery & Carleton Clinic (#DR1)

Cllr Denise Rollo, executive member for sustainable, resilient and connected places, said: “Phase 2 of Cumberland Go funded buses marks another important step in our commitment to revitalising transport links across our city, towns and villages.

“These new routes will make it easier for people to travel affordably and sustainably for work, education, and leisure, reconnecting communities and improving access to essential services.

“I’m particularly pleased that the routes in this phase support sustainable links to Cumberland’s tourism attractions including Muncaster Castle, Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway and connecting coastal communities.

“The success of these services depends on two things: strong operator engagement to keep routes reliable and continued public support to ensure they thrive.

“I want to thank our residents for sharing what matters most to them, our operators for stepping up to deliver these vital connections, and the dedicated team behind the scenes who have worked hard to make this happen.

“Cumberland Go is about connecting communities, one journey at a time – and we encourage everyone to make use of these services so they can continue to grow.”
