Three months of roadworks are planned for a Carlisle viaduct in the new year.
Cumberland Council said it would be carrying out essential maintenance work on Durranhill Viaduct from January 5.
The viaduct carries the C1045 (Eastern Way), which links Warwick Road (A69) and London Road (A6), over Durranhill Road and the Carlisle to Settle and Carlisle to Newcastle railway lines.
Metcalfe Plant Hire Ltd has been awarded the contract for Phase 1 remedial work.
Phase 1 will include:
- Replacement of bridge joints
- Installation of waterproofing
- Resurfacing of the carriageway and footways on spans 4–8
- Installation of bollards along the full length of the west footway
- Repairs to steel parapets (spans 1–8) and masonry parapets (span 9)
- Drainage improvements
Future phases will address joint replacement, waterproofing, and parapet repairs on the remaining spans, the council said.
The second phase of the work is planned for the 2026/27 financial year subject to funding.
Phase 1 is expected to last around three months, subject to weather conditions. Completion is anticipated in April 2026.
Traffic management will include two-way lights and path closures.
One pavement will remain open at all times, with a safe crossing point for pedestrians.
A drop-in event will be held at Harraby Community Centre on Monday, December 15, between 4pm and 6pm for people to find out more about the work.
