Train passengers are advised not to travel today.
Disruption is expected after the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning until 6pm today.
An amber weather warning is in place for rain until 6pm on Monday for parts of the county.
Network Rail said trains will run at reduced speeds in some areas.
As a further precaution, no passenger trains will operate until 6pm on Monday on the following lines:
- Carlisle to Whitehaven
- Corkickle to Barrow
- Oxenholme to Windermere
- Carnforth to Skipton
- Carlisle to Skipton
- Barrow to Preston
- Lancaster to Morecambe
Alternative transport will not be provided.
Customers who re-plan their journey or experience disruption will be able to use their ticket to travel with another operator if necessary today where possible or Tuesday December 16 to get to their destination
Customers with Northern tickets dated Sunday December 14 and Monday December 15 who wish to travel today and Tuesday are able to do so on Northern train services.
TransPennine Express services north of Preston may be disrupted. TransPennine Express destinations north of Preston include Lancaster, Oxenholme Lake District, Penrith North Lakes, Carlisle, Lockerbie, Carstairs, Motherwell, Haymarket, Glasgow Central and Edinburgh.
Avanti West Coast services north of Preston are likely to be significantly disrupted. Avanti West Coast destinations north of Preston include Lancaster, Oxenholme Lake District, Penrith North Lakes, Carlisle, Lockerbie, Motherwell, Haymarket, Glasgow Central and Edinburgh.
Delays and alterations are likely. You are strongly advised to check before you travel.
Phil James, North West route director at Network Rail, said: “We are expecting extremely heavy rain and winds in Cumbria and parts of Lancashire, which could disrupt the railway.
“Our top priority is keeping passengers and staff safe, and we’re working hard behind the scenes to prepare.
“Teams are carrying out extra inspections and putting contingency plans in place, with staff ready to respond quickly to flooding. We’ll be monitoring conditions closely and doing everything we can to keep people moving safely.”
Andy McClements, customer experience and transformation director at TransPennine Express, said: “With poor weather forecast, we are asking all customers planning to travel through Cumbria to check carefully before heading to the station, as we will be running an amended timetable.
“We also expect that many of our services we are able to run in the area will be disrupted – often at short notice.
“Trains that do run are likely to extremely busy given the time of year and the reduced number of services in operation.”
