The A66 between Scotch Corner and Penrith has now reopened to high-sided vehicles.
National Highways said wind speeds have dropped to a safe level.
It was closed last night due to the strong winds and drivers travelling across the Pennines are advised to plan ahead and consider alternate routes such as the A69.
However, the road was closed again this afternoon to high-sided vehicles at around 1.30pm.
