Firefighters have issued a warning about festive decoration after a Cumbrian crew was called out to a house blaze this week.
Shap Fire Station said its crew was called to a house fire in the village on Friday.
It said: “Working smoke alarms and quick action from the occupant lead to the fire being extinguished and out on arrival, preventing what could have been a serious fire.”
But it urged people to take care while decorating their homes for Christmas.
It added: “Where possible avoid the use of candles and naked flames. If they are to be used, to makes sure they’re placed in suitable firm holders and not placed near any soft furnishing or decorations.
“Also avoid the urge to overload extension cables and ensure if used they’re fully unrolled and clear of anything that could accidentally cover and aid overheating.”
It also issued a plea for people to be mindful about parking.
It added: “A lot of households will see increased numbers of people over the festive season and with this can come extra vehicles.
“While we understand parking can be difficult in some areas we kindly ask that before leaving your vehicle any time of year ask yourself ‘have I left enough space for emergency vehicles to pass?’
“Allowing us to pass through more quickly and safely can make a huge difference in responding to emergencies and the outcome.”
