Emergency services are dealing with a collision on the road being used as the main diversion route while the M6 is closed.
The collision happened on the A6 between Hackthorpe and Thrimby at around 3.35pm yesterday, Saturday January 3.
The road is currently blocked.
Police and partner agencies said they were working to get the diverted northbound traffic moving as soon as possible and drivers were thanked for their patience.
It is understood the Great North Air Ambulance was called out.
The road reopened at around 6.25pm.
