A Cumbrian swimmer has won a scholarship to a US university.
Olivia O’Mahoney, who currently attends Caldew School in Dalston, has secured the four-year scholarship at the New University of Mexico in Albuquerque.
Olivia will be jetting out to the USA to study in August this year at UNM, a top tier research university with outstanding sporting facilities.
Talented swimmer Olivia will train for 20 hours a week on top of her university studies and will become part of the LOBOS Sports teams.
Currently swimming for Cockermouth under coach Sean Balmer, Olivia balances studying for her A-levels at Caldew School with 13 hours of swimming a week.
She will also represent England on the Diploma in Sporting Excellence Programme, which boasts Adam Peaty as a former member.
It is a specialised qualification designed for athletes/students who have the chance to demonstrate and develop their capacity to meet the demands of a high-performance sports performer.
Olivia said: “I am very proud of myself for getting to where I am today and I am excited for the future opportunities to come in the USA.”
Caldew School headteacher Vicki Jackson said: “We are so proud to hear that Olivia has been given this amazing opportunity.
“Her dedication to her studies and her swimming is exemplary and shows just how far hard work and commitment can take you.”
