Work is set to start on a new Carlisle skatepark next week.
Cumberland Council said contractors will move into Hammond’s Pond from Monday to begin work.
The project has been created in partnership with leading skatepark designers Canvas.
Cumberland Council said it was hoped it would deliver a vibrant and inclusive space for skaters, BMX riders, and scooter enthusiasts of all ages. Consultation took place last year with local youth groups including The Rock and Carlisle Youth Zone, alongside an online questionnaire.
It will be built behind the former aviary site.
During the construction period:
- There will be no disruption to the play park or entrances to Hammond’s Pond.
- Hoarding will be placed around the construction area for public safety.
- Some footpath obstructions and construction noise may occur.
- Site access will be required by the contractor throughout the park, and larger vehicles may be present. The council said all movements will be carried out in a safe, carefully monitored, and controlled manner to always ensure public safety.
It is part of the Start with the Park initiative, which is a £2.6 million investment to create and improve green spaces between St Cuthbert’s Garden Village and Carlisle city centre. The project is funded by Carlisle Town Deal.
The skatepark is scheduled to open in the spring.
