A new chief executive for a Cumbrian council has started work.

Miranda Cannon will lead Westmorland and Furness Council from today, Monday January 12, following her appointment being agreed by full council in October 2025.

As chief executive and head of paid service, Miranda will provide organisational leadership for the council, working with elected members and partners to ensure the council continues to operate effectively and deliver services for residents, businesses and communities across Westmorland and Furness.

Miranda joins the council from Salford City Council, where she was executive director of resources and transformation, leading major programmes of work focused on prevention and early help, improving access to services, strengthening organisational systems and introducing new ways of working.

She has also held a number of senior leadership roles at Leicester City Council, giving her broad experience across complex local government services and governance.

She grew up in the region and now lives close by, the council said.

She said: “I am honoured to be joining Westmorland and Furness Council as chief executive.

“This place, its people and its potential mean a great deal to me. I am looking forward to working with our dedicated staff, elected members and partners to deliver positive outcomes for our communities.”

Jonathan Brook, leader of Westmorland and Furness Council said: “Miranda brings the skills, experience and commitment needed at this important time.

“I am delighted to welcome Miranda and I look forward to working closely with her, as we continue to improve services, support our residents and shape the future of Westmorland and Furness.”

The authority added that in her first weeks, Miranda will be spending time visiting teams across the council, meeting partners and gaining a detailed understanding of local services and priorities.
