Windscale hosted their first Wearside League game of 2026 against Willington but were beaten 3-1 – with all the goals coming in the first-half.
In fact the Atoms went behind after just three minutes, mainly due to centre half Ray Sempill losing his footing.
That allowed the Willington forward to eventually round the Atoms keeper and square for a tap in despite the best efforts of Dan Morgan to keep the ball out.
Windscale then settled well and moved the ball round promisingly with Callum Bell having the first strike at goal which was deflected wide.
However it was Willington who scored again after 15 minutes from what seemed to be a harmless cross from the left which evaded everyone and went in off the far post.
Bel, who was the Atoms’ most influential player in the first-half, pulled one back on 23 minutes.

Rob Davidson went on an overlap run, leaving the space for Bell to cut inside and shoot low past the keeper.
Unfortunately for the home side they couldn’t follow up and leaked a third goal six minutes later.
A direct ball down the middle of the Windscale defence was misjudged which allowed the Willington striker to inflict further pain on the Atoms just as they were coming back into the game.
Prior to the break there was an unfortunate incident after the key home player Bell was pushed in the back as he was shielding the ball from Willington defender Adam Metcalfe.
He was still shoving off the field and eventually Bell was launched into the Atoms’ newly built stand, crashing into their recording equipment and the concrete slab.
It was a dangerous situation and if Bell had not taken evasive action by holding his arms out to break his fall, it could have been much worse.

It was still bad enough as Bell was unable to continue and was replaced by Ben Mahaffy while Metcalfe received a yellow card.
Some minutes later, another fracas started after Windscale manager Stephen Fawcett placed the ball into the chest of Willington’s Metcalfe requesting a throw-in taken quickly.
The official decided this warranted the same punishment he had administered to Metcalfe earlier and he produced another yellow card.
At the start of the second half started the Atoms were really fired up and they were close to pulling one back on a number of occasions as Aiden Kegg, Davidson and Travis Fyfe all had efforts which were saved.

The Atoms changed shape to allow more wide threats, which came in good numbers, but none of which were successful.
Unfortunately the game drifted away into a stalemate, slow and lacklustre, and it wasn’t to be for Fawcett’s men.
There was nothing between the teams except for two mistakes at key moments which Windscale were punished for.
Windscale are next in action away at Barnard Castle, on Saturday.
Here’s what Stephen Fawcett had to say:
