A Lake District hotel has been placed in creditors’ voluntary liquidation.
Joint liquidators have been appointed to handle the affairs of the Scafell Hotel Ltd at Rosthwaite in Borrowdale.
According to a notice in the London Gazette, Armstrong Watson has been appointed as joint liquidators.
In October 2023 The Keswick Reminder reported that the landmark hotel had been put up for sale with offers in the region of £2.75m being sought.
It followed the retirement of Miles Jessop who bought the hotel in 1971, aged 29, from the Badrock family who had previously run it for 47 years.
His decision to retire from the business was partly influenced by the health of co-director Andrew Nelson.
The hotel was built originally as a private residence for the artist Mary Barker who is one of the first women on record to scale Scafell Pike alongside William Wordsworth’s sister Dorothy.
The property sits in around five acres of grounds with 23 en suite bedrooms, a 60-cover restaurant, lounges, and self-contained Riverside Bar.
Armstrong Watson said: “Although we’ve only just been appointed liquidator of the company mentioned, at present we don’t have a comment to make.
“The business ceased trading and closed a couple of years ago and it is well known locally that the building has stood empty since.
“If anything changes and we feel there is something new for public interest then we would consider offering a comment.”
