National League leaders York City showed how tough it’s going to be for Carlisle United to regain their Football League place.
The Blues were outplayed last night at Brunton Park as York completed an impressive double over the Cumbrians with a 3-0 win.
York are unbeaten in 16 league games, and on a run which has catapulted them through the play-off positions to sit top of the table.
Carlisle trail them by three points but from a game more and are among a clutch of, largely ex-league clubs, battling for the play-offs.
It was a confident display by York who were given a sixth minute lead after a run from Ben Brookes opened up the home defence for John Stones to slot home.
There was an immediate opportunity for Carlisle to level when Georgie Kelly was sent through one-on-one but York keeper Harrison Male denied him.
York had to wait until the 75th minute to increase their lead and it came from the penalty spot following a hand ball, with Alex Hunt making no mistake from the spot.
Former Barrow winger Alex Newby added the third right at the death, but Carlisle were already a well beaten side.
