Two of the leading sides in the Cumberland County League meet on Saturday in the Conway Cup.
Unisun Athletic and Maryport Athletic squarep in Carlisle for a third time in a Cup competition and it’s 1-1 at the moment.
Unisun won the Fred Conway County Cup game at Maryport while Maryport won the Benevolent Cup game in Carlisle.
The two still have to meet in the Premier League, but what once looked a two-horse race between them for the title, has widened to four teams in with a shout.
Workington Juniors forced their way into the reckoning with a 4-1 win at Maryport on Saturday, and a win at Keswick on Saturday will put them top.
Keswick are having it rough at the moment, slipping to a second successive home defeat last weekend.
Once again manager John Phillips had to send his troops into action with an under-strength line-up – and things weren’t helped by a very early injury to goalkeeper Charlie Thomson.
He suffered a head injury and had to be replaced but Keswick did not have a regular keeper on the bench.
Phillips said: “Our right-back went in goal but later our goalkeeper from last season came down to watch. I found him a kit and he went on to play.
“Our problem at the moment is that a few of our young lads are playing for Workington Reds Under-18’s and they had a big game at Marine last week, which they won.
“I have 12 players for Saturday at the moment and we are up against an in-form Juniors side who beat us 10-1 at their place earlier in the season.
“As well as some of the younger players who are absent our captain Alfie West will miss out after being injured on Saturday.”
The leaders are: Maryport Athletic played 10, 23 pts; Workington Juniors 10, 21; Unisun Athletic 7, 19; Mirehouse 9, 19.
Mirehouse will be looking to move second if they win at local rivals Whitehaven Miners while the other Premier Division game sees Aspatria host Cleator Moor Celtic reserves.
The other Conway Cup-tie being played on Saturday is at Cockermouth where Wigton Harriers are the visitors.
There are five Division One games scheduled: Bransty Rangers v Whitehaven Miners Development; Carlisle City Development v Unisun Development; Dearham United v Silloth; Whitehaven reserves v Northbank; Windscale reserve v Cockermouth reserves. Two of the leading sides in the Cumberland County League meet on Saturday in the Conway Cup.
