Britain’s first astronaut Helen Sharman has visited Carlisle to inspire students from across the county.

Helen Sharman was welcomed by Pears Cumbria School of Medicine and University of Cumbria to the area as part of a series of STEMM outreach visits across local schools.

Helen became the first person from the UK in space on May 18 1991, when she launched into space for an eight-day mission orbiting the Earth, most of which was living and working on a space station.

Her visit was aimed to inspire young people to consider futures in science, engineering and the growing opportunities in healthcare and medicine now available within the region.

Throughout the week, she has delivered talks to students from Whitehaven, Carlisle and Maryport sharing insights from her career as a scientist and astronaut and highlighting the breadth of opportunities that STEMM subjects can unlock.

Designed for year 10 to year 13 students, the sessions included guidance on university pathways, engineering careers, student life and the skills and qualities needed to thrive in science‑based professions.

She said: “STEMM subjects keep so many doors open for young people.

“Whether it’s engineering, medicine, or careers they don’t yet know exist, I want students to understand that their options are wide and that places like the University of Cumbria and PCSM are creating incredible opportunities right here on their doorstep.”

Helen met with students at Trinity School in Carlisle for interviews and photo opportunities to mark the end of her first visit to Cumbria.

Keeley McConachie, Teacher of Science at Trinity School said: “Helen Sharman is a British icon and has inspired so many people.

“She doesn’t just talk to students – she ignites their imagination.

“When she speaks, space feels that much closer, amazing possibilities open up and every student walks away believing that extraordinary achievements in STEM are within their reach if they just take a chance and aim high.”

Professor Mary Morrell, head of school at PCSM, added: “PCSM is about improving health outcomes for the people of Cumbria by training doctors within the communities they will one day serve.

“Helen’s work helps young people see what’s possible and how STEMM can launch a future in medicine right here in the region.”

Helen’s extensive outreach work at Imperial College London aligns closely with PCSM’s mission to widen participation and boost aspirations among young people from underserved or rural regions.

Her talks demonstrate how STEMM subjects can lead to a wide range of careers, including medicine and reinforce the message that students from Cumbria can pursue high‑quality medical training without leaving the county.

Louise Gray, outreach manager, University of Cumbria said: “We’re incredibly proud to welcome Helen to Cumbria as we celebrate this new chapter in local healthcare education.

“Her visit reflects our commitment to helping young people understand and access clear, achievable pathways into medicine and other essential healthcare careers.”
