Whitehaven Miners Social added to the misery of Keswick’s start to 2026 with an impressive 8-0 win in the Cumberland County League Premier Division.
They led 3-0 at the break and pulled even further clear against a Keswick side who have lost their way since the turn of the year.
Bradley Keenan (3), Ben Graham (2), Paul McNally, Nathan Walkinshaw and Hadley Davies scored for the visitors.
Keswick ended 2025 with a fine 2-2 draw at champions Maryport Athletic but have lost three straight games at home since then by ever-increasing margins.
Maryport had their home game with Mirehouse called off because the pitch was unfit and attempts to switch the game proved fruitless as similar conditions prevailed.
Unisun Athletic took advantage with a 4-0 win at Wigton Harriers and now look favourites for the title.
Shane Dosward, Ellis Dickinson, Mikey Williamson and Jake Nicholson scored for Unisun, who also had the boost of seeing another challenger in Workington Juniors well beaten.
The Juniors had been making steady progress into second place but were well beaten at home by Cockermouth, rejuvenated after winning through to the Conway Cup final the week before.
It was 4-1 at half-time and although Cockermouth could add only one more without reply it was a satisfactory result for the visitors.
The free-scoring Luke Graham (3) and Sam Wright (2) scored for Cockermouth with Macaulay Sharp on target for the Juniors.
Four games were played in Division One while a fifth, Bransty Rangers and Northbank was postponed because of an unfit pitch.
Leaders Dearham United were held 3-3 at Cockermouth reserves with Troy Paterson (2) and Elliott Irwin scoring for the hosts who trailed 1-0 at the break.
Jack Brown, Danny Dryden and Jack Dunstan scored for Dearham.
Whitehaven Amateurs made it a good day for the club after their first team had managed a long overdue win in a West Lancashire League Cup game.
The reserves beat Silloth 4-1 with goals from Taylor Kilgour (3) and Connor Kilgour while Bradley Williamson netted Silloth’s reply.
The points were shared after a 1-1 draw between Windscale reserves and Unisun Development. Dylan McAlone netted for Windscale with Dec Moore ensuring Unisun went home with a point.
The other game saw Whitehaven Miners Development beat the bottom side Carlisle City Development 4-0.
Jamie Thursby, Jay Wilson, Tyler Kyle and an own goal made up the Miners tally.
