Rising Danish talent Niklas Holm Jakobsen is set to launch his first full British Speedway season with the Workington Comets in 2026 — and the club caught up with the new signing.
Jakobsen’s speedway career began early, with his father’s support being crucial.
As he progressed to 500cc bikes, he credits new Comets number one Jonas Jeppesen and others for the influence on his career so far.
He says: “I was six years old, and got on a PW50 for the first time in Esbjerg Motorsport, 10 minutes away from where I live.”
“My dad has been helping me since the start of my career and of course my whole family have been supporting me. When I moved up to 500cc I have got a lot of help from Jonas and Tim Sørensen.”
That connection with Jonas Jeppesen proved pivotal in opening the door to British Speedway. Jakobsen spent time in the UK last season alongside him, gaining some vital experience.
He added: “I have always wanted to go to the UK, difficult tracks, more grip and more races to improve myself. Last year I was with Jonas in Berwick to see what it is like and I just wanted to go.”
When it came to choosing a club, advice from the new Comets number one, Jeppesen, alongside conversations with former Comets and GP riders, played a significant role.
He said: “I chose Workington after talking with other riders, like Jonas, Claus Vissing and a bit with Hans Andersen.”
Alongside his Workington commitments, Niklas has clear ambitions for the season ahead.
“I want to qualify for the SGP2, be top 3 in the U21 Danish Championship and qualify for the Danish senior final,” he added.
The 18-year-old is under no illusions about the challenge ahead but is eager to get started with winter preparations already underway.
He said: “I have been stretching, running, cycling and weightlifting, to be as sharp physically as possible.
“I am 100% ready, I have a busy calendar, and I hope to race as much as possible. I don’t know a lot about the UK so the first season here I will be learning, but I think it will be a great experience.”
