Pupils are set to benefit from new bathrooms at Langwathby C of E School after parents joined forces with a former pupil to provide a welcome upgrade.
The school’s bathroom facilities were still safe and fully operational however there was concern they had become outdated and no longer reflected the modern learning environment the school was striving for. However, neither the school’s own budget nor local authority funding could support the cost of a full refurbishment.
Headteacher Sally Hay shared her concerns about the situation with parent Darren Todd and it was not long before a team of Langwathby community heroes had sprung into action, a group of dedicated volunteers coming together to help wherever they could, offering their time and practical skills to reduce labour costs.
The project gained momentum when former pupil Henry Wannop, owner of HW Services, offered to carry out the necessary plumbing work free of charge.
Further support was provided by MKM Building Supplies, with James Stephenson helping to source necessary materials at no cost.
Mrs Hay, on behalf of the governors and staff, said: “We are incredibly grateful to the parents, former pupils and local businesses who have given their time, expertise and generosity to support our school.
“This project is a wonderful example of our community coming together to enhance the environment for our children.
“On behalf of the governors and staff, thank you to everyone involved for helping us create bright, modern bathroom facilities that reflect the care and pride we have in our school and our learners.”
In a display of community solidarity, the refurbishment project is well under way with plumbing work taking place during February half-term.
The plan is for the bathrooms to be painted and new floors fitted over the Easter holiday in order to complete the refurbishment.
