Whitehaven have confirmed that former skipper James Newton will take on the role of interim head coach following the resignation of Anthony Murray.
Newton will step up, having been a part of Murray’s backroom staff during his spell at the club, and had been appointed head of strength and conditioning heading into pre-season for the 2026 campaign.
Neil Frazer will stay in role as assistant coach alongside Newton, starting with this weekend’s Championship home fixture versus Midlands Hurricanes.
Newton made 238 appearances for the club across two spells, making his debut in a 32-22 victory over York City Knights in the Northern Rail Cup in 2013.
He ended his career with 34 tries and 5 goals after being forced to retire following sustaining a neck injury at the end of the 2024 campaign.
Whitehaven RLFC CEO Lee Butterworth said: “James is relishing what is in front of him, and the board of directors have full confidence in the current coaching staff in maintaining the standards set by Muzza since his appointment in 2024 in the interim period.
“The club is in no rush to appoint a new head coach and will ensure all avenues are explored to ensure the right person is appointed to continue the work started by Anthony, the current back room staff and those behind the scenes.”
The club has invited applications for the role of head coach with the application window closing at 10am on Friday March 6 with interviews due to begin week commencing Monday March 9.
Butterworth added: “We ask all fans, sponsors and stakeholders to be patient with the club during this period of transition. We will update all when appropriate as we progress through the interview process.”
