Families were able to experience the magic of live theatre last Christmas thanks to the generosity of Lake District audiences.

Audiences who visited Theatre by the Lake in Keswick to watch the Wizard of Oz raised £14,972 via the venue’s Give the Gift appeal.

Their donations meant over 150 children and families from West Cumbria facing barriers to accessing live theatre could attend the festive production for free.

For many, it was their very first visit to the theatre, and each child also received a complimentary ice cream.

The theatre worked with partners including Public Health at Cumberland Council and Keswick Food Share to ensure the tickets reached families who would benefit most.

Val Ayre, public health manager at Cumberland Council, said: “Providing free tickets to vulnerable families from areas of West Cumbria offers far more than a festive day out, it opens the door to a magical cultural experience many would otherwise be unable to access.

“Visiting a theatre in such a beautiful and inspiring setting gives children and their families a rare chance to escape daily pressures, spark their imaginations and create joyful memories together during the Christmas season.

“For families facing financial hardship, opportunities like this can strengthen wellbeing, build confidence, and foster a sense of inclusion by making them feel valued and welcomed within their wider community.”

Families supported by Keswick Food Share were also invited to attend.

Jean Murray, chair of Keswick Food Share, said: “Our customers had a wonderful time and we received lots of positive feedback. It was a really special treat for people who often struggle at this time of year, and it was greatly appreciated.”

Additional support came from Cockermouth Rotary Club, which funded free buses.

Funds raised through the Give the Gift appeal will continue to support families across Cumbria, helping provide free tickets for children and families in 2026, including for the theatre’s Christmas production of A Christmas Carol, as well as supporting wider community engagement work during the year.
